Capitalizing on strengths,
not focusing on disabilities
Home About Us Our Riders Our Horses Our Volunteers Our Programs Opportunities To Help

herapeutic Riding works by involving the rider's body and mind to promote
increased self-esteem and confidence, as well as to improve posture, balance, hand-eye coordination and muscle tone.

Horseback riding gently and rhythmically moves the rider's body in a manner similar to a human gait, so riders with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance, and muscular strength.

For individuals with mental or emotional challenges, the unique relationship formed with the horse can lead to increased confidence, patience, and self-esteem.

Our riders range in age from 3 to 92, and have a variety of disabilities ranging from autism, cerebral palsy, developmental delays and emotional challenges. Our mission is to bring out the strengths and capabilities of each individual rider, to focus on what our riders CAN do rather than what they cannot.

Our trained and professional staff, volunteers, and horses work as a team to provide individualized lessons addressing the physical, emotional, social and cognitive challenges of special needs children and adults. Each rider's unique strengths and needs are carefully considered. This distinctive experience of acheivement, joy, and community inspires and empowers everyone involved.

High Horses Therapeutic Riding Program has been serving residents of the Upper Connecticut River Valley region of New Hampshire and Vermont since 1993. We are one of only three programs in Vermont whose standards meet the demanding criteria to attain "Premier Accreditation" by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA).
